Staffordshire Wildlife Artist – David Spencer

Staffordshire based artist, David Spencer is passionate about painting wildlife, capturing a realistic look and feel, down to the fine detail. With no formal art training and a previous profession as a scientist dealing with pollution and the water industry, David has self taught himself to paint through a ‘look, learn and practice’ ethos.

His work is currently on display at Artworx Gallery, Cannock between 1st October – 31st October 2012. Opening Times: Monday – Friday 9-5.30pm. Saturday 9-5pm.

His accuracy for capturing a life-like realism of animals is a true testament to his skill and ability. David produces these paintings using several different techniques including: Oil painting; scraperboard; and acrylic paint on slate. Each of which requires a high level of patience and commitment. The black medium of the scraperboard reveals a white surface when scratched with a sharp blade, this is where David then carefully paints in the colour and detail with a very fine brush to produce intricate and distinctive results. This unique technique is incredibly time consuming, as David has to think where he wants the negative space, and it only takes one false move to ruin the whole piece.

David shines some light on his work, “Having always painted and been interested in wildlife, particularly birds, I decided to combine the two and take an offer of early retirement to fulfil the ambition. This occurred in 2004 and since then I have exhibited my work at a number of local venues including Lichfield, Blakenall and Halesowen.”
