Original Contemporary Art by AJ Callan

A. J. Callan is well known in the art world and his work has been collected for many years.  His whole approach to his work allows him to create memorable and fun pieces of art. His use of texture, mixed media and complimenting colour palette fuse to create tactile and atmospheric work with a hint of humour. Artworx Gallery recently had the opportunity to ask him a few questions to see what makes him tick. Here is what he had to say:

Q: What do you think is the most important influence in your art?
A: My surroundings. I live on a farm full of animals, each with their own characteristics. This gives me an endless supply of references for my current work.

Q: What makes you want to paint?
A: Excitement. My head is always full of ideas and I need to put them down on to canvas before I forget!

Q: Do you work certain hours each day or only when you are inspired to work?
A: I work approximately 11 hours each day, six days a week, most weeks. I am addicted- I suffer withdrawal symptoms when I am away from my studio. Sad but true!

Q: What would you call your style?
A: My current style is naive humour. I also enjoy semi-abstract photo-realism.
Q: How long does one piece of work take? And do you work on one piece at a time or several?
A: It is always difficult to gauge as I always work on several pieces at once.
Q: What is the best thing about being an artist?
A: There are no rules to follow. I paint what I want, when I want.
Q: What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
A: Stay focused and be yourself. Be willing to make sacrifices because you are in it for the long haul. Set your sights high. Oh, and always have a full wine rack!

A.J. was born in Glasgow in 1958. He showed a natural flair for art at a very young age. After school he spent five years studying art. He then spent the next 27 years in the world of design in Leeds based agencies. Illustration made up a large part of his work, giving him the necessary disciplines and experience he would need for the future. In 2006 he handed in his car keys and laptop, and made a career change to ‘live his dream’. Since then his published and original works have sold worldwide to collectors who share his perspective on life. A.J. wants to share with you the positive, heart warming feelings that he puts into each of his originals.

‘Like any artist I feel the need to express myself through the use of imagery. This is my way of interpreting the world in which I live. It helps me make sense of what I see and what I think. Sometimes I need to depict accurately every detail of what is in front of me. At other times I just let my imagination run riot and create something that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. The contrast between the two approaches gives me plenty of scope to indulge myself during the creative process.’
